Cute Bear

Bear I learned to make in class. What I learned about this is size. If you made the head larger than the body, it creates a cuter or more of a comically character. This balloon uses double sided tape to affix the ears. The body is also a 5" round balloon where the head is a 11" balloon. The legs and eyes were also affixed with double sided tape. The nose is an apple twist.

1st attemp at Life Size Princess

This is my first attempt at a life size princess. This is a bald headed one. I used lime green 646 because that is what I had. The hem of the skirt I used 360 balloons. The body used 2 646s that were folded over so that the cross section had a total of 4 balloons. Does that make any sense? The head I believe is a 16" Qualatex balloon. I left it bald because I wanted to see what it looked like before I tried to put hair on her.

This is my attempt on making hair. Unfortunately, I pumped up the 16" too
much and was unable to squeeze out a small bubble on top to affix the hair. So I made a helmet like hair that just sits on top of the head. I used 260 black balloons. It seems to work okay, but the back was a bit bald. So I would need to put more 260s to cover the hair and perhaps to give her a pony tail or something. I do have a rant about the 260 Onyx by Qualtex. I have had them for about a year and I've noticed that they often pop easily. Anyone else noticing this.
Anyway after a somewhat unsuccessful life size princess in my mind, I decided to buy Ken Stillman's Princess DVD from Tmyers.com. Hopefully that will get me to the next level. :)

Birthday Party that Never Happened

This was an attempt at making something like Thomas the Train. I didn't have the right sized balloons. I tried to kind of weave a train. Didn't come out like I thought. The chimney should have been a black 360, but without the 360 balloon I weaved it with 260 balloons. It actually came out better than I thought. The roof of the engine should be larger. I made it the same size as the bottom of the train. The red railing I really had no attachment points so I kind of puffed out. Everything was attached at the bottom, so it did not center well. If I were to do this again, I think I would leave more attachment points. The front which you cannot see I thought was pretty cool because it was made from a round 7" balloon that I apple twisted the tip of a 260. So it kind of looked like a nose. I also have to think how to make wheels for the train next time. I didn't continue on because the birthday got canceled. Our friend's son got sick on his birthday. But the experience in trying to make it was fun. Anyway Happy Birthday you know who you are!!

Birthday Decoration
This was the first balloon column I made. I saw a you tube video and I learned from it to make these balloon decorations. The time to make it was quite quick, only after you have blown up the balloons. The toughest part is to blow up the balloons so they are the same size. It just looks better. While taking a class in balloon decorating, they used the Conwin dual sizer. This blows up balloons based on time and creates a pretty uniform size consistently. It also makes it easier to tie two balloons together. However, the cost is prohibitive if you only use it a few times.
Next time I would use a different topper. I think it might look better. I think using a mylar balloon or a really big balloon the effect would be even better. After the party was over, I gave the balloon clusters to the kids. They loved them, but they like all balloons no matter what the shape.

Stork for Elli

My first attempt at a stork balloon sculpture. Friends of ours just had a baby, so I made a stork based on a design that I learned from a class I took with Colin Myers and a Dave Bartlett DVD. My wife's comments were - the head is too small and the tail is too plain. I noticed these, but because of time pressures I didn't make a larger balloon head which I had wanted and more tails feathers. Each time I do these I find that I improve. You can see the swan design that Colin did for our class and the difference. I think he did a better body by not having as many gaps between the body. I think it could be done if I just used a 360 balloons once across and not doubled back or if the length of the 360 balloons were closer.
